The Port Arthur, Coal Mines and Cascades Female Factory Historic Sites are all World Heritage listed and offer essential, must see experiences for any visitor to Tasmania.
The Port Arthur Historic Site, located 95 kilometres south east of Hobart, offers fascinating guided tours, interactive displays, historic buildings, ruins and museums, a cruise on the harbour and tours of the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer. The nightly Ghost Tour offers an atmospheric insight into Port Arthur's past.
A half hour drive from Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula, the Coal Mines Historic Site today is a peaceful bushland area where visitors can explore the ruins of houses, barracks, offices and cells of those who were once incarcerated there.
The Cascade Female Factory is Australia's most significant site associated with female convicts, located a short distance from Hobart's city centre. 'Her Story' is a 45 minute dramatised guided tour that operates daily.
